Homeward Bound (HB) is a groundbreaking, global transformational leadership initiative to elevate the visibility of women, with a STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine) background, leading for a sustainable future. It was created to increase the influence and impact of women leading with a STEMM background in making decisions that shape the future of our planet. Our vision is that, by 2036, we have supported and engaged a globally diverse leadership network of 10,000 women leaders with a STEMM background who are ensuring the sustainability of our planet.

Why Women? Globally, women are significantly underrepresented in leadership positions, and change has been incredibly slow, despite increasing dialogue and process/ systems changes. (Although women comprise 60% of university graduates, only 10-20% of them make it to senior decision-making roles or professional-level academia. By providing these women with leadership, visibility and strategic skills, a sound understanding of the science, as it informs what is happening to our planet,’ and a strong purposefully developed network, we will enhance their ability to lead for the greater good, to impact decision-making for a sustainable future. Why the focus on STEMM? We believe scientific endeavour plays a critical part in resolving our most ‘wicked’ global problems moving forward. We aim to support women into positions of influence, where they can have impact. We want to tackle the challenge of science communication and the visibility of women leaders in STEMM. Additional to the overarching gender imbalance in leadership, women in STEMM face additional challenges specific to these fields. What is HB’s role in this change? HB’s Strategy Map shows how HB will contribute to this change, namely through its ground-breaking Leadership Program, cultivation of a strong alumnae network and strategic communications and engagement.

About the role

HOMEWARD BOUND PROJECTS IS SEEKING AN EXPERIENCED LEADER IN THE ROLE OF CEO TO LEAD OUR TEAM TOWARD AN INSPIRED AND IMPACTFUL FUTURE. 

This is a very exciting and forward focused leadership appointment with a global transformational leadership initiative, aimed at increasing the influence and impact of women leading (with a STEMM background) for a sustainable future. 

  • Are you an inclusive, innovative and accomplished leader with global experience who works towards a more sustainable future? 
  • Do you see the need to challenge/change/evolve the practice of leadership? 
  • Would you like the opportunity to work with a brilliant community of stakeholders?  
  • Do you have extensive experience leading in an executive role and are looking for an opportunity to give back?  
  • Are you worried about our future and want to work on a global initiative that has a very good chance at changing the global practice of leadership?  
  • Are you conscious of the importance of self-awareness and collaboration, resilience and adaptability, and flat organisational structures as the fastest means to our shared future? 
  • Do you have experience working in the not-for-profit sector? 
  • Do you have global experience?

Owning purpose and values: The ideal candidate will have:  

  • A deep commitment to elevating the visibility of women leading for a sustainable world;  
  • Ideally, prior experience working with women with a STEMM background; and  
  • Be able to work in a flat organisational structure by living the principles of collaboration, inclusion, legacy mindset and trust with assets (money and people).  

The CEO will embody a demonstrated passion for HB’s purpose, visionary goals and values.

Influencing strategy and adapting funding and operations: Working with the Board and other stakeholders to influence strategy and evolve our operational and funding model to support our strategy and growth.
